'Poor schools endanger U.S. prosperity'

Though academic achievement of U.S. students is improving, it still ranks poorly compared to other developed countries and is not catching up, Stanford University education economist Eric Hanushek told a room full of students Tuesday.

It is already a problem, and has been since the advent of Prop 13 in this state. The worst schools in Massachusetts perform better than the middlin' schools in California, according to a chart in a recent edition of the Economist. Finland, Germany, Japan, Poland! and South Korea left us behind decades ago. India and Communist China are passing us by now, and they spend a tiny fraction of what we do on education.

I think the cause, and the game, are already lost!
