NASA, USGS among agencies affected by shutdown

Original post made on Oct 1, 2013

Several government operations, including some local branches, ground to a halt at midnight Monday after Congress failed to pass a budget in the culmination of a bitter battle over the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

There two agencies could be closed for business a couple of weeks, and it's diffcult to believe that anyone would miss them.

Today I tried to research appliances on the Dept. of Energy's EnergyStar website, but alas, they disabled the product finder for the shutdown.

Can't they at least keep the web servers on?

Web servers aren't free, and although they may be important and useful they aren't essential to protecting the safety and security of the public. That is the criterion being applied.

The whole point of the shutdown is that the Republicans want you to feel their pain. Without making everyone hurt, there is no incentive to change.

What pain do Republicans feel?

Do they feel less pain when they keep 20 - 30 million from getting health insurance under obamacare?

Do they feel less pain when my insurance company cancels my coverage for a pre-existing condition?

Do they feel less pain when seniors can't get increased preventive services?

Do they feel less pain when the deny women the large improvement to women's health services?

Or are they whackjobs that just feel better when they refuse to pay the bills they ran up as congresscritters?

Pretty stupid. Every poll blames them and others show their chances to retain the House dwindling in 2014.

Dumb. Misguided. Petulant 5 year olds.

obamacare is constitutional. It is the law. 40 failed votes to repeal. THe very definition of insanity. Repeal and replace? Sure. Where's the REPLACEMENT?

Be realistic, Obamacare primarily benefits poor people, who are unlikely to vote Republican. Why should the Republicans care about them? Same goes for women.

Only poor peeps have pre-existing conditions?

Only poor peeps are worried about annual and lifetime caps?

Only poor peeps want to keep their 25 year olds on their plan?

Only poor peeps need increased preventive services for seniors?

Yes, it is definitely a women's health law. Thank you, Mr. President!

I love what people think is essential and non-essential. I think stinking rich 1/10th of 1 percent corrupting our government and running it from behind the scenes are definitely non-essential.

"O, reason not the need! Our basest beggars
Are in the poorest thing superfluous.
Allow not nature more than nature needs,
Man's life's as cheap as beast's. Thou art a lady.
If only to go warm were gorgeous,
Why, nature needs not what thou gorgeous wear'st,
Which scarcely keeps thee warm." King Lear

Stupid.

Tea bagging republicans have no idea of what they are doing.

"We're not going to be disrespected, We have to get something out of this. And I don't know what that even is."

-- Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN), quoted by the Washington Examiner, on the government shutdown.

What a "moran". Web Link

Shutting down the government will cost our economy jobs. Revenue,. Impede the recovery. Cause pain for the poor. Affect health care. Slow safety inspections. Slow food inspections.

Republicans: making America look like a "moran" to the rest of the world.

The government "shutdown" consists of only 18% of feds being furloughed. Not to worry! Your welfare checks, food stamps, Section 8 Housing vouchers, SSI Disability checks, and other government handouts will arrive without delay. America the Beautiful! What a great country!

One poster says: "Shutting down the government will cost our economy jobs. Revenue,. Impede the recovery. Cause pain for the poor. Affect health care. Slow safety inspections. Slow food inspections."

The next poster mocks it.

Pretty sure which one understands Christian values (or values inherent in most other religions as well.)

Yes, may God Bless America.

The government has been shut down 17 times many by Democrats.

A bill or law can be "constitutional" and still be flawed. In this case heavily flawed. Pelosi infamously said "you have to pass it to see what's in it". Now as we are finding out what's in it Obama is selectively not implementing or delaying key portions that wreak havoc and endanger his party in midterm elections.

Since ObamaCare was passed without a single Republican vote it seems fair it get funded without a single Republican vote.

My long time major family healthcare insurer just notified me our policy will not be renewed next year because of the new Obamacare rules. New coverage will cost us almost twice as much.
