The new 'your speed' signs on Alma Street

Original post made by Kevin, Greendell/Walnut Grove, on Sep 28, 2013

A few months ago two of those electronic "Your Speed" signs were installed along northbound Alma Street. One thing is funny about them: they seem to be set for the wrong speed limit. They flash "SLOW DOWN" at people who aren't speeding, or even doing 5 MPH below the 35 limit. Has anyone else noticed this?

No one drives 30 on Alma. ;-). If you think they are set wrong, you could bring it to the attention of the city. Public works should be the right department.

Did the city pay for this? When was this discussed and approved. Perhaps the weekly can look into it if they are not too busy cheer leading for the city at events like the piazzas electric charging station

It could be flashing "SLOW DOWN" at the guy behind you doing 50.

Kevin is a registered user.

I have no idea who put them in, it's possible the county did it. Alma street is also a county route from San Antonio to Oregon (I am not a Palo Alto Weekly employee).

I noticed this too ... it is so annoying.
Seems like it is just built to irritate drivers.
I also thought the limit on Alma once you get out of downtown was 35?

I've think these things should be like speed limit signs. Normally the LED should be white or green displaying the speed limit. When traffic is going over 5 miles above the speed limit it should turn yellow and maybe flash. Higher than that it should turn red and maybe flash. It should not be annoying or take your eyes off the road. The ones on Alma seem to turn off completely, and then pop on in a distracting way.
