Susan Crawford for FCC Chairman

Original post made by Jeff Hoel, Midtown, on Feb 17, 2013

I recommend reading Susan Crawford's new book, "Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age." It is an insightful analysis of why Internet access in the United States is so bad. In the absence of reasonable regulation, a few giant telecom corporations have acquired enough market power to demand high prices for inferior products.

As a seasoned European traveler, I am always amazed at how fast the Internet is in Western Europe (Great Britain, not so much).

I have been told repeatedly in the last ten years that it is because there are government standards and regulations. In the EU, the government and the business sector seem to have more awareness of each other and their respective goings-on, particularly in Germany.

Why is there not more of that here? Deregulation of certain industries, such as the ones that control other people's money and safety, have been disastrous. The government needs to be kept in the loop in regards to the things businesses do.
