San Antonio Road will be repaved between Middlefield Road and U.S. Highway 101 during the night on Thursday, Sept. 27, and Friday, Sept. 28, as part of Phase II of the San Antonio Road Median Improvement Project. The nighttime work is planned to minimize commute-traffic impacts, the City of Palo Alto has announced.

Westbound San Antonio will be repaved Thursday night between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. On Friday night, eastbound San Antonio will be repaved between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. One lane will remain open in each direction at all times, but drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes if possible.

In preparation for the night work, asphalt grinding on San Antonio Road will occur earlier in the week during daytime hours. No major work is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Following the repaving, utility manholes and valves will be adjusted to grade level and the final striping will be installed seven to 10 days later. After the road rehabilitation is completed, the final construction phase will include a new irrigation system, new trees and landscaping, which will be installed in October and November.

Construction began in November 2011 and is nearing completion. The project was partially funded by a $900,000 Highway Safety Improvement grant to improve all medians, intersections and roadway conditions. More information about this Capital Improvement Project is available at www.cityofpaloalto.org/sa, or by calling 650-329-2295.

  1. Paving work on San Antonio Road clogged traffic this morning. Unfortunately your article wasn’t posted until after I sat through the traffic. Thanks for your timely reporting. 🙂

  2. Not sure if this is the same work happening overnight, but I too have just been stuck in clogged traffic coming through San Antonio at Middlefield. Trucks trying to turn right do not have enough turning space and are causing headaches as they cause problems for traffic in all directions.
