Two Palo Alto online news stories today. Two shooting deaths. It's beyond discouraging the stranglehold the National Rifle Association has on our lawmakers. Even the slightest attempt to curb the Wild West availability of hand guns and/or assault rifles is met with no-holds-barred resistance.
The number of shooting deaths in this country is a disgrace. And the tired old line about "only outlaws will have guns" just doesn't work. Every day we read about persons killing their family members. If they had to get up close and stab them, the victims might have a chance to defend themselves or run away.

Guns are quite common in many places, and there is little to no crime. On the other hand, places with severe restrictions have terrible crime. Its not the gun, its the person who uses it to kill or harm another. I don't speak for anyone, but I am pro-gun rights, but very anti violence!
The issue as I see it is the cycle of poverty, hopelessness and a lack of love and family. Better schools and students motivated to learn and discover the wonders of the world mean less crime.
Consider this analogy: drugs are illegal. I mean, they are basically completely and totally illegal. Does that "curb availability?" No, it does not. It provides a very profitable and violent black market. They drugs come from other countries, and when they supress the flow from one, they come from another. If they don't come from outside the US, they are made right here in our backyard.
So, why would a murder, or some drug lord care if guns are illegal? He's still going to get it, or get someone to make it for him. He won't care how much it costs, because it will be worth it, and plenty of people will be willing to provide them and make a handsome profit. Meanwhile, law abiding citizens like you or me will have no way to protect themselves. Sure, I'll call the police first - of course. Defending yourself with a gun is an absolute last resort, and even then there will be hell to pay (look at George Zimmerman), but I'd still rather be prepared than at the complete mercy of civil unrest and continuing police cutbacks.
What some call "common sense gun control" has never been shown to work. Look at Chicago - guns were subject to the highest levels of control, but there are still 600 murders a year there.
Gun control has a surprising history embedded in racism and anti-immigrant sentiment. ,
Sylvia, I respect your opinion. I bet you are motivated by love for your fellow human beings as am I. You may just be surprised how many gun owners and NRA members abhor violence as much as you. The last thing we want is guns in the hands of criminals!

There is very little in common between these two deaths. One victim is a career criminal, the other a promising young high school student. One shooting is likely retaliation, the other probable mental illness.
