Palo Alto needs cheaper clothing store

Original post made by shopper, Palo Alto High School, on Oct 7, 2011

Interesting editorial in the Paly student newspaper.

Is Palo Alto losing out on huge amounts of sales tax revenue because of the very limited selection of stores in the the city? A lot of people are shopping online or out-of-town because they can't buy what they want at local stores. What percentage of your taxable purchases are from local stores?

Palo Alto needs a target or walmart or khols. For day to day school clothes, these stores are the best. Not many can afford to buy day to day school clothes from the stores in the Stanford Mall ..

It wasn't that long ago that there was a Ross (dress for less) store at the corner of University and Emerson.

It's gone for the obvious reason - not enough business.

Nordstrom Rack - right across the 101 in EPA...

With the cost to rent retail space and the lack of appropriately zoned land for large stores (which target, etc. would need) plus the fact that both Target and Kohls have stores one town north and one town south of us means we will not get them. Walmart is a whole other story, I doubt we will see one anywhere near by (and the one in Mountain View is disgustingly dirty).
