Lonely Shopping Carts

Original post made by Gene Coan on Feb 12, 2010

For months, commuters at the California Avenue train station have been treated to the sight of shopping carts dumped into the no-man's land between the station and Alma. I tried reporting this to Caltrain, which replied that this area is the responsibility of the the city of Palo Alto, not Caltrain, and they would forward the message. More months went by, and the abandoned shopping cars are still there. Noticing that one of them belonged to Country Sun, I reported it to that marked, and the person answering the phone responded with gratitude, saying that they would pick up their valuable cart immediately.

Two more months have gone by, and the carts are getting very sad indeed.

If I was in the grocery business, I would join a consortium of other grocers to hire someone to recover abandoned and stolen shopping carts. Those things are expensive! The City of Palo Alto should make it known that shoping cart theft is a crime, and that the local police department will enforce the law.

All we seem to get from our city officials is a cave-in to the "don't criminalize poverty" crowd.

Doesn't the several grocery stores already have a company pick up carts? Could check with Piazza's, Molly Stones, Safeway, et al and find out.

How about a free app that reports lost shopping carts to the company that picks them up. Check out CartSnap (Web Link)
