Don’t expect any help from Sacramento this year, state Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), a former mayor, warned the Palo Alto City Council Monday night.

“I expect it will be a year of a modest set of accomplishments,” Simitian said. The state will face an approximate $10 billion deficit and has been curtailed in its efforts to raise money by Republicans who have taken a pledge against new taxes, he said.

Fortunately the state is largely constrained taking money intended for local governments and school districts to lower the deficit, Simitian said.

The council also discussed library funding, environmental efforts, high-speed rail and attempts to lower the threshold to pass civic and environmental ballot measures to 55 percent from 66 percent.

That isn’t likely, Simitian said.

“Palo Alto is very different from the rest of the state and we forget that at our own peril,” he said. “The clear majority of Californians think that government at every level has enough money to get the job done.”

He also urged the council members to work for the improvement of the greater community, rather than solely representing the interests of the city.

  1. If the Revolutionaries in the government would have respected the will of, “We the People” and enacted Proposition 187 instead of deceitfully overturning it we may have avoided these problems.

There still may be time for them to redeem themselves by enforcing the immigration laws. Not only may it help them avoid arrest, it could go a long way to save some of the children’s futures.

Remember, aiding and abetting illegal aliens is a felony.

  2. I, for one, am tired of having to vote for the lesser of two evils. But if Kerry had won in 2004, the whole country could look like the state of California. The main problem with Bush is that he tries to be too much of a democrat, as in the area of illegal immigration. At least the mainstream republicans have blocked him on this wrongheaded agenda.
The greed, stupidity, and shortsightedness of the democrats, who virtually control California, has bankrupted this state. Their shameless pandering to illegal immigrants for votes, has cost the state many billions of dollars a year for the social services, medical expenses and schooling of illegals. This must stop if we are ever to emerge from our budgetary black hole.
The democrats won’t even admit that this IS the problem, let alone address it. They have brought this crisis upon themselves and unfortunately, upon all the rest of us residents. Californians better wake up soon and stop mindlessly and selfishly voting for the democrats before it is too late to turn the tide.
