This week John McCain "proudly" accepted the enthusiastic endorsement of Rev. John Hagee, a white evangelical who is the pastor of a sprawling "mega-church" in Texas, and has been called radical, extreme, and hateful.
While Sen. Obama has been excoriated by the right for remarks Mr. Farrakhan and Rev. Jeremiah Wright have made, although Sen. Obama has repudiated Farrakhan's endorsement and condemned Rev. Wright's statements, Sen. McCain seems to have been given a pass.
Oh, and Sen. Lieberman, Sen. McCain's ally, has compared Hagee favorably to Moses.
Some of Rev. Hagee's statements strain the imagination:
"All Muslims are programmed to kill and we can thus never negotiate with any of them.
"God caused Hurricane Katrina to wipe out New Orleans because it had a gay pride parade the week before and was filled with sexual sin.
"The End Times -- Rapture -- is imminent and the U.S. Government must do what it can to hasten it, which at minimum requires: (a) a war with Iran and (b) undying, absolute support for a unified Israel, including all Occupied Territories."
He has waged war against the Catholic church, calling it variously "The Great Whore," "an apostate church," the 'anti-Christ," and "a false cult system . . . "
