Save Winter Lodge

Original post made by Parent on Feb 1, 2008

I can't believe the City wants to parcel the Winter Lodge with the gas station site and bring in retail and office space.

Kids and parents alike love the Winter Lodge, we have lessons, parties, school socials, church socials, scout socials, broomball, ice hockey, as well as the tennis courts. Expanding it would make more sense.

We are supposedly going to lose the Palo Alto Bowl, we can't allow our kids to lose another great place to have fun.

Whoa Parent,

Where did you hear about this? What stage is it at? Winter Lodge is hugely popular and it's unique. Can't believe anyone's serious about this, but I know it's possible.

I thought they were talking about letting Winterlodge buy/lease the gas station area for additional parking ... no?

Midtown gas station to become retail building?

Although it would be great to replace a vacant gas station on Middlefield Road with a retail/office building, it would be even better to expand the project to include the neighboring Winter Lodge property, the Planning and Transportation Commission agreed Wednesday.

Thanks for the link,

It's not clear to me, though, that there are any plans to get rid of Winter Lodge--it says the landownder wants to incorporate the building with Winter Lodge.

Honestly, I'd rather have a gas station back. We could use one in Midtown--the closest, I think, is San Antonio (or Charleston). We don't need another cafe--since there are four cafes in Midtown.

No, say it isn't so! Winter Lodge is beautiful and such a wonderful place for children and families to go. That would truly be "paving paradise and putting up a parking lot" (to quote Joni Mitchell). Why not move that Starbucks to the gas station lot? The parking is horrible at that other location on Colorado/Middlefield. Also, Winter Lodge patrons would certainly be buying lots of lattes while they watch their little ones learn to skate.

I've found that you can easily walk to Creme de la Cafe and back during a lesson . . .

It would be good if we got some reassurance that Winter Lodge will NOT be tampered with.

Who do we write to? What's the Winter Lodge's position? Are they actually threatening the winter lodge or suggesting improvements?

Editor - will you please do a follow up story to get more info for us?

And on the other note - do we really need to attract more traffic to this area with office building? Or are we getting T-d up to get more high rise dense housing shoved down our throats? I like the idea of some sort of small business going in there - or like another poster suggested - the expansion of the Winter Lodge (internal coffee shop, bigger lodge area, additional rink space, other sports activities, etc.

Don't panic Winter Lodge isn't going anywhere with Jack Morton on the City Council to protect it. (Jack Morton was one of a group of people who saved it some years ago).

Hi all,

The planning commissioners didn't mention replacing the Winter Lodge. They didn't like the lodge's parking lot, but said they would like to add a new building to fit in with the lodge, like a cafe where kids could grab a snack.

Thanks Becky for clarifying this.

The article certainly worried many of us.
