Stanford Theatre: Another Performing Arts Center?

Original post made by Midtown Guy, Midtown, on Oct 25, 2007

Palo Alto already has a potential Performing Arts Center, unused, and if we can prevail on its non-profit owner, it might make a very nice additional venue for the Stanford Lively Arts program. I refer to the refurbished, historic Stanford Theatre on University Avenue, with its art deco style, huge comfortable seating in orchestra and balcony, big stage, and organ. It is used about half the year now for classic films and is closed the rest of the time.

Are you listening, Mr. David Packard? You have already converted the movie house in San Jose into a Performing Arts Center for the Silicon Valley Symphony. Couldn't you allow those many weeks when the Stanford Theatre is dark and not showing classic films to be used for Stanford Lively Arts performances? Folks could have dinner and a show without trying to drive Stanford's serpentine roads trying to find a place to park. Residents of Downtown could walk over to hear the St. Laurence String Quartet or Itzak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma performs duets. Imagine!

Talk about a classy downtown. Parking garages already built. Some programs on weeknights. It even has the Stanford marquee and Mr. David Packard's Stanford connections. Please!
