It is time to dump the farce of secret labor negotiations and conduct public business in public. "Is this your last best offer?" - "No, it is my next-to-last, pre-fallback offer."
Labor negotiations are not a card game nor a war, but an attempt to determine compensation agreeable to both sides. Threats, lines in the sand and other games have no place in the process. I don't want workers resentful for being saddled for four years with some gotcha chicken, nor do I enjoy boom time benefits burdening us in bust times.
Open covenants, openly arrived at. Sound familiar, democrats?

Walter-
I can't help but agree with what you're saying for the most part. However, I think it would be better if the whole lot was simply thrown to an independant arbitrator at the very beginning. Have both sides flesh out their sides and then throw it to a tribunal. Done deal. It would save a lot of time and anguish.

Walter, I agree with you. It would be nice to have some transparency - SEIU is embarrassed on these boards and the city is silent. Neither position is acceptable.
