RE: Grab bag news....Palo Alto Mediation not working...

Original post made by Right to peaceful enjoyment, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Mar 31, 2009

Three tenants had disputes with their managers and contacted PA Mediation. There were several other tenants that had complaints, but were afraid to come forward, fearing backlash.
The managers refused to come in. Instead, a PA Mediation person talked to a supervisor. There was no round table, face to face discussion with the tenants and/or the supervisor being present.
This item was swept under the table with the one tenant eventually evicted, one tenant under total scrutiny and hurassment and the one other one planning to take it further alone and try to sue in court for discrimination.
The PA Mediation can not appear in court for either side. Kinda like a secret society with no one being held accountable for what is said in "mediation".
The PA Mediation has rules that were of no help in this case. It was noted that if things were not worked out between the parties and hurassment noted, that the case would be sent to the PA City Attorney's office for charges. Nothing happened, no calls were returned to any three of the original tenants from the Palo Alto Attorney's office regarding this problem after several messages were left. One person managed to tell the partial story to PA Attorney's secretary but no response calls were had.
Just thought I would post this up to let others in the community know that this program is not working. I see it advertised on the Utility bill and other places. But probably because of the hard nose nature reputation of the landlords in this case, the meadiator who only called back the one original complaintant was not savvy enough to deal with the problem all the way to the end and tried passing on it, which the tenants feel that was part of the problem.

Update.. there has been one tennant family a month giving notice and moving out due to poor management.......

Oh well you say. Life goes on. Buzy place.

Yes, it's only a "business"...but renters should have the right to be treated fairly and with respect. I have a hard time believeing that this kind of attitude even exists here in this town. But I am seeing a different kind of business going on at that one apartment complex. Management is running short, old, and long time residents, families and the elderly also- out of the place they used to be able to call their "homes".

With their holyer than thow attitudes.....this place has become a "city within a city", ignoring most all rules without any reprecussions. SAD.
