If both Bush and Cheney were to resign their offices one hour before the Inauguration, Nancy Pelosi would become, for one hour, the first woman president of the United States. With just a bit of preparation, there might even be a bill of some significance to women for her to sign, another first. I believe protocol would entitle her to the title Madam President the rest of her life. Somebody pass the word up.

Technically, Pelosi would only be "Acting" President, not the actual President. Only a vice president can succeed to the title of President of the United States.
