Four Cars Broken Into Last Night on Ruthelma Ave. Palo Alto Issues, posted by Susan, a resident of the Charleston Meadows neighborhood, on Jun 10, 2008 at 5:37 pm
I live on Ruthelma Avenue near Charleston in the Charleston Meadows area, and last night four cars on our block got broken into. The theives smashed windows on older cars without car alarms and stole sunglasses and car radios. They went onto people's driveways and smashed windows.
No car alarms went off and so most neighbors did not see the break-ins until morning. However, I did hear some door rattling last night in the a.m. hours probably around 2 a.m., and was going to wake my husband, but I was not sure what it was.
My neighbor who has lived in the area for decades said that this area is usually very quiet and he said that something like this has not happened in a long time.
I am very concerned about the increase in crimes and burglaries in Palo Alto.

Susan: you have my sympathy. It was only a month or so ago that four cars were broken into in Charleston Gardens. At least three of them were on resident's driveways. Radios, GPS and other personal items were taken. This follows several cars being broken into in the Greenmeadow neighborhood.
Unfortunately, so many residents think their cars are safe just because they are parked in their driveway and don't lock their vehicles. I not only lock my car but I have a boot on the wheel, and I don't leave anything in it.

I know it's only property (and you should carry insurance just because of this type of unfortunate delimma). THINGS can be replaced. YOU can not. How scary to wake up to an unfamiliar sound and have your heart almost jumping out your throat from fear of the unknown.
DO NOT HESITATE to call 911...program it on your phone in case you are shaking badly enough that you misdial (it happens).
