Facebook 'violates privacy laws'

Original post made by phil on Jun 1, 2008

A Canadian privacy group has filed a complaint against the social networking site Facebook accusing it of violating privacy laws.

The Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic has listed 22 separate breaches of privacy law in its country.

Clinic Director Phillipa Lawson told the BBC that, with over 7 million users in Canada, "Facebook needs to be held publicly accountable".

The basis of the complaint, filed with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, states that Facebook collects sensitive information about its users and shares it without their permission.

It goes on to say that the company does not alert users about how that information is being used and does not adequately destroy user data after accounts are closed. Web Link

No one can demand privacy for public acts.

I tend to agree with you Walter. I have my own Facebook page so that I can let my kids know that I see everything they post about themselves. I have had to talk about them putting addresses and phone numbers there, but apart from that they are doing OK. But, I see other people's pages, some just vague acquaintances, and it is very easy to get information about people and they probably don't realise it.

So Walter your points are quite correct. If you post anything on Facebook you are really making that public even if you don't realise it. Facebook is a very public media and provided people are careful they will be fine. The real problem is that many people think that the information they leave there is just for friends and they are wrong. Friends information gets to their friends, which gets to their friends, and nothing is truly private.

The real thing is making aware that any information posted is public. If that was made clear to everyone at the outset it would be a lot better.
