Israel & 911

In a recent public appearance at Bar Ilan University in Israel (reported in Haaretz Service & Reuters News), the Likud leader, Bejamin Netanyahu, boasted that terror attacks on the US on September 11 had proved to be extremely favorable to Israel, "swinging American public opinion in our favor." This statement raises extremely troubling questions on what role Israel played in persuading the neo-cons of the Bush administration to launch the disastrous war in Iraq. As many reporters have since admitted, Iraq lacked the firepower to impose any threat to the US or indeed on its Middle East neighbors. There is growing evidence that the Iraq war was launched in response to pressure from pro-Israel hawks and the powerful pro-Israeli lobbyists in Washington. In a revealing statement, Israeli Prime Minister Olmert stated that, "when America succeeds in Iraq, Israel is safer." His critics castigated Olmert lest it be known that Israel vigorously supported the attack on Iraq and played a key role in its execution (see 'The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy", p 243 'Selling the War to a Skeptical America,' by Professor John Mearsheimer, University of Chicago & Professor Walt, University of Harvard). Is American and Iraqi blood being shed on the shifting sands of Iraq to promote Israel's security? Our unconditional support and close ties to Israel has thoroughly compromised our foreign policy and security.
