Barak, Burkha, Abortion Rights
Original post made by Gary, Downtown North, on Feb 23, 2008
I asked her why she was supporting Barak, instead of Hillary. She rattled off some not-very-nice epithets about Hillary and how she 'put up with that scoundrel husband of hers, only to try to gain power, and how that diminsishes women, etc.' (that is my very short, and kindly, summary of it). Then she talked about Barak being for pro-choice, and new "hope" and the near-immediate withdrawl from Iraq and Afghanistan ("bring the boys and girls home!").
I asked her if she had concerns about unleashing jihad, instead of containing it. Her short answer was "no". Her long answer was also her short answer. Then I asked her if she was concerned about her granddaughters wearing the burkha. Her answer was a bit more nuanced on this point, becasue she said that she would be worried about it if she lived in Europe, but not here. Then I asked her about her great-granddaughters, here. On this point, she said that it could happen.
Then I asked her if her great-granddaughters should have freedom of choice, and how they would be free to choose, if they had to wear the burkha. She seemed stunned. She then said, "I haven't thought about that, but I probably should."
At least this woman has an open mind.
Now, if Barak does what he promises to do, will he be able to answer these questions as honstly as this woman just did this morning?
