Some films are perfect for the pint-sized viewer. This fantasy-infused adventure is rich with eye-popping visual effects, colorful characters and tear-jerking family dynamics. But adults should be warned that the depth stops there -- compared to other myth-and-magic flicks such as "The Lord of the Rings" or "Pan's Labyrinth," "Spiderwick" feels like "Sesame Street."

I previewed this movie yesterday, prior to bringing my 10 year old and his friends..
I kept jumping out of my skin. Pretty intensely scary movie with very realistically scary monsters and scenes. Skipped a lot of the story in favor of scary graphics. Bummer.
If THIS is PG, I would hate to see PG-13! I don't recommend it if a kid of 10 is at all nervous or jumpy.
NOT bringing my 10 year old and his friends. Frankly, not sure it would even be ok until around 12.

Afraid I can't really answer this as I haven't read the book, but I haven't heard any complaints that the film strays too far from the source material.
