Movie review: "The Spiderwick Chronicles"

Original post made by Tyler Hanley, digital editor of Palo Alto Online, on Feb 15, 2008

Some films are perfect for the pint-sized viewer. This fantasy-infused adventure is rich with eye-popping visual effects, colorful characters and tear-jerking family dynamics. But adults should be warned that the depth stops there -- compared to other myth-and-magic flicks such as "The Lord of the Rings" or "Pan's Labyrinth," "Spiderwick" feels like "Sesame Street."

I previewed this movie yesterday, prior to bringing my 10 year old and his friends..

I kept jumping out of my skin. Pretty intensely scary movie with very realistically scary monsters and scenes. Skipped a lot of the story in favor of scary graphics. Bummer.

If THIS is PG, I would hate to see PG-13! I don't recommend it if a kid of 10 is at all nervous or jumpy.

NOT bringing my 10 year old and his friends. Frankly, not sure it would even be ok until around 12.

My 10 year old son and his friends love this book. Does the plot follow the book and if they know the plot is it less likely to be scary?

Afraid I can't really answer this as I haven't read the book, but I haven't heard any complaints that the film strays too far from the source material.
