Petition to limit number of kids affected by LASD Boundary decision

Los Altos School District (LASD) superinteTim Justus recently released figures admitting that over 800 K-8 LASD students stand to be affected by the redrawing of the boundaries as voted by the School Board in June 2007.

This number (20% of the District children) comes as a shock to many, who were originally told the fallout would just affect just 387 kids, or 10% of the district.

The greatly increased number comes in part from the many kids who are not currently attending their school of attendance because of overflow situations in the past.

While it is noble to want to get these students back to their "neighborhood" school, the fact remains that many of them, especially ones with upper graders, may not WANT to leave their adopted school. Yet the board is making no special provisions for these families who have already been wronged once. If they want to stay put, they must fill out the intradistrict transfer form just like everyone else. Many may be loath to do so because of the Board's newly implemented ONE YEAR term for intradistrict transfers--anyone who is granted one is not guaranteed a place in their transfer school beyond that year. Familes faced with this instability may elect to move (albeit reluctantly) only to displace other students who wish to remain where THEY are.

This petition hopes to address this issue and also pushes for a TWO-YEAR intradistrict transfer period and more lenient grandfathering for current 3rd and fourth graders.

Please sign it and pass on the url to other concerned LASD residents.
