Volkswagen to fund Stanford research lab

Volkswagen of America announced Thursday that it is giving $5.75 million to Stanford University to build and fund a new laboratory for automobile teaching and research.

Thank you Stanford and VW for bringing automobile research to the West Coast! Driving, making, filling up and maintaining cars and trucks provides more than 1 in 10 jobs in our economy yet requires over half of our oil and produces more than half of some of the pollution in our cities. In addition, a few million people get hurt of die each year in accidents and smog related early deaths. It's about time someone got serious about one of the biggest root cause behind the most dangerous and inefficient inventions that has ever powered a civilization. Congratulations Stanford for building a limb outside of Detroit!

I would hope they study the efficacy of ton/miles/gallon as opposed to CAFE standards in efficient fuel use and safety.
