Tonight is the last school board meeting for Gail Price and Mandy Lowell, after eight years of service each to the district. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the many hours they put in, plowing through board packets that often exceeded 100 pages, sitting through meetings that frequently went past midnight, staying in touch with constituents by email and phone, and attending PTA and other community meetings.

We ask our board members to be well versed in a wide range of issues that impact our district, including education policy at the national, state, county and local level, leases, contracts, labor negotiations, budget management, technology, Education Code and the Brown Act, student performance, textbook selection, transportation, safety, student and staff discipline, student health and wellbeing (stress, nutrition, drug, alcohol and tobacco concerns) and many others.

Gail and Mandy dedicated themselves to our district, and dealt with difficult situations over the years with grace and dignity, never forgetting that the children in our community were their primary concern.

Yes, thank you very much, and also to those who diligently attend the board meetings, volunteers and interested parties. This is part of the process and our thanks are for you also.

Yes, thank you both. I think you were very principled and thoughtful in your time on the Board. I wish you the best, and I wish you a good long rest. :0) Thanks for serving so well ans so diligently.

While both people served diligently and well, I want to point out that Gail did so while also working full-time.

It is a pity that we have gotten to the point where it is perceived to be virtually impossible to serve on our Board AND work.

I wonder if it is time to consider salaries for our Board members so that those who must earn a living can also consider running.

I agree it would be nice to have a more balanced school board that represents all walks of life in PAUSD, but what living-wage salary would you suggest?

This is serving the public not a job, though we DO thank and appreciate those who put themselves forward to do this

We don't need an incentive to get working people to run, but if we want that kind of representation, we need to elect them. Two candidates in the most recent race work full time: Wynn Hausser and Claude Ezran. Wynn lost to the incumbent by a nose, Claude trailed Wynn by about 1800 votes.

A larger turnout in this off-year election might have produced a different outcome. Maybe next time.

Don't miss out on the discussion!
