Palo Alto, CA -- While visiting Robles Park on Thursday evening, a man and his young child were the victims of an armed robbery. Two suspects, one armed with a knife and the other armed with a handgun, stole the adult victim's property then punched him in the face and slashed his forearm with the knife. The victim sustained a minor injury and was treated at the scene by personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department. The young child was not physically harmed. The suspects fled the park on foot and remain at large.

On Thursday, August 15, 2013, at about 8:43 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call of a robbery that had just occurred at Robles Park, located at 4116 Park Boulevard. Officers responded to the area immediately, but were not able to locate either of the two suspects.

The investigation revealed that the victim (a male in his thirties) and his young child were approached by two suspects as they were leaving the park. The first suspect, while holding a small folding knife in his hand, demanded the adult victim's personal property. The second suspect simultaneously pointed a black handgun at the adult victim. The victim cooperated and turned over his personal property.

The first suspect then punched the victim in the face and slashed the victim's forearm with the knife. Fortunately, it caused only a superficial wound. Both suspects then ran from the area on foot. The adult victim ran with his child to a nearby residence and asked the residents to call police.

During the robbery, the adult victim had placed himself between his young child and the suspects. The child was not physically harmed. We are not identifying the age or gender of the child.

The adult victim described the first suspect as a Hispanic male in his mid-twenties, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds. He was clean shaven and had short dark hair, and was wearing a brown shirt and black pants. The adult victim described the second suspect as a black male in his mid-twenties, about 6 feet 1 inch tall about 200 pounds. He also was clean shaven and had short dark hair, and was wearing a black T-shirt and black pants. No suspect vehicles were seen.

Detectives are actively investigating this incident, including any possible connection to another armed robbery involving two suspects that occurred near downtown Palo Alto on Monday, August 12, 2013. It is possible that the adult victim in last night's case may be able to meet with a police sketch artist; if that occurs, any available sketches will be released as soon as possible.

Officers are increasing patrols in our neighborhoods and at our parks in response to the robberies.
