I had a near miss on the same ramp when an SUV came down the wrong way! I always hug the inside curve when traveling up that ramp.
They need to add more WRONG WAY signs, or paint to make it more clear.
Put a webcam on this off ramp. This happens more often than you think only this time the offender hit a police car.
The driver of the Impala was probably thinking, If you're gonna be a bear, be a grizzly bear.
All these Alma/Oregon ramps are confusing even when I know them I have to double check as they all look similar. I expect the driver was from out of town and/or using a GPS.
Very pleased nobody was hurt.
If you check out the northbound street view, there is a sign reading "Page Mill Expwy" that appears to be directing drivers to the ramp that's going the wrong way. Yes, the ramp does have two red "Do Not Enter" signs on it, but when you're in the right lane preparing to turn, it's easy to miss them as they're at a 90-degree angle to Alma.
How old is the driver?
This is about as stupid as landing short at SFO - too much reliance on navigation tools when all you have to do is drive and pay attention.
"There were no serious injuries from the collision"
"The exit ramp was closed for hours after the crash"
Why close the ramp for hours and make everyone suffer?
I did the same thing as that driver once, but was lucky there was no accident. Everybody was going slowly enough, and I managed to back out of the off ramp. At the time, I was not familiar with that stretch of Alma. I wanted to go onto Oregon Expressway, going east. This was before GPS. And I am a careful driver, who in over 30 years of driving have not have a single accident.
The bottom line is that that area is very confusing for drivers not familiar with it. It ought to be marked more clearly.
Why photograph the driver from the back instead of from the front?
I grew up in this town, and many years ago made that same wrong turn at night in the rain. I saw the left turn sign on Alma going south, thought I was turning towards home onto Eastbound Oregon, and to my horror realized I was heading down the exit ramp from Page Mill instead. Fortunately it was late at night, no one was around, and I extricated myself from the situation. I think of it every time I drive past.
I agree with those who say the signage needs to be better.
In order to get into this ramp the wrong way, one would have to cross over the Double Yellow line and miss both the DO NOT ENTER signs. If a driver is paying attention and drive in that striped lanes correctly, there should be no way they end up in this situation.
Agree that exit does need to be improved given it is right next to the entrance. Could the city put a physical barrier (raised curb, or polls) to prevent a car from crossing the double yellow to get on to the exit ramp?
Don't miss out on the discussion!
