City asks residents, firms to save energy today

Palo Alto's Utilities Department wants city residents and business owners to cut down on electricity use today, after several San Jose Pacific Gas & Electric transformers were damaged by vandals early in the morning and the California Independent Service Operator issued a "Flex Alert" for Silicon Valley.

How did they ask us to do this?

I heard nothing about it until much too late and I expect most heard nothing either.

Perhaps if they seriously wanted us to reduce usage, a CANS message would have been a good idea.

@PAUtilities sent out a notice via Twitter about noon on Tuesday. @PaloAltoFire and other local public safety agencies also sent out messages based on PG&E's announcement.

You'll be happy to know that Palo Alto has hired it's "first-ever chief communications officer" (Web Link) for $175,000/year. I'm hoping her official business card won't have the phrase "missing link" on it!
