HSR Corruption - Foreshadowing

Original post made by Jim H., Duveneck/St. Francis, on Apr 10, 2013

California has been using the Chinese High Speed Rail construction as an example of what we can expect here in California. Not surprisingly, the head of the Chinese HSR has been charged with corruption (taking bribes and abuse of power).

Hopefully, HSR ends with the electrification of CalTrain. With the way most public projects are run in CA, it'll cost $60B just to get that completed...

What do you expect from a communist dictatorship?

We are a capitalist democracy - HSR was approved by voters and is/will be audited.

But by all means, slander on with a silly straw man, Jim.

SIlly me. What was I thinking? There've NEVER been ANY corrupt politicians or government officials in our capitalist democracy. There have never been any cases of politicians/gov't officials taking bribes to award contracts. Let me go back and bury my head in the sand.

Voters voted for a $33B plan. It's now double that. Stop with the "the voters voted for it" defense.

The New Yorker magazine had an appalling article about Chinese corruption and coverups concerning the HSR in China - from the get-go. I gather they quickly buried the evidence so little investigation could be done (after the horrendous crash) - and who knows if they even held accountable the correct responsible "officials" - I assume Communist Party members were protected. I oppose following the Communist Chinese as a blueprint for California's high HSR, it sure sounds unwise to listen to anything they do over there.
