Is Palo Alto the Charter for Troop 57 of the Anti-Gay Boy Scouts?

Original post made by palo alto parent, Duveneck/St. Francis, on Mar 29, 2013

From the article in the Weekly - "charter organizations sign a contract with the troop to provide a meeting place, sometimes offer financial aid, and train a representative. "

Boy Scout Troop 57 meets at Lucie Stern and has a store there. Does that mean that Palo Alto is their Charter organization? If so, why are we supporting a discriminatory group as a City?

While I understand that there is a potential for the Boy Scouts policies to change in May, if they vote to continue to discriminate against gay people, I don't think the City should provide them facilities. Nor should the Cub Scout troops be allowed to use the school multi-purpose rooms.

I agree that public entities should kick out scouting across California. That would put pressure on BSA to change the policy. I think Lucy Stern actually gave the building and land to the scouts, or to the city with the caveat that scouting could use it. That doesn't mean however that the government has to honor that. If she gave it to the KKK with the understanding that they could use it, the City wouldn't be letting the Klavern meet there. Governmental orgs across CA need to send the message to scouting that they will lose support, chartering orgs, meeting places, etc if they don't stop discriminating. This is how you make change. Am I the only one who remembers South Africa?
