Teen cell-phone driving bill passes Senate

A bill banning teens from communicating on cell phones or pagers while driving passed the state Senate today. The bill, SB 33, previously passed the state Assembly.

The penalty is FAR too light.

It should be

Ist offense - 6 month driver's license suspension, and $500

2nd offense - driver's license suspended until 21 years of age, $1000, and mandatory driver safety classes totaling no less than 40 hours. Driving test required to get reinstated.

IMO - Fining a teen is no good. The teen has a car, has a cell phone, both paid for by PARENTS. Guess who ends up paying the fine?

No, you must do something to make the teen pay the consequences. I would go for community service. Picking up trash on freeways where they might be seen by their friends - that will do it.
