Can only wonder what the police would do if they caught this character. Since he's a juvenile, he will probably be given a pat on the back. [Portion removed by Palo Alto Online staff.]
Old folks deserve better than this. Maybe it's time for some "sting" operations .. which bait a trap for these punks with some cops with a lot of makeup, and a license to "make my day".
its that ''make my day' attitude that creates this climate in the first place. advocating aggression is the way of the USA
Sometimes, I think that we need to bring back some "rough justice" on mindless punks like this.
Prophett, are you KIDDING ME?? A 16 year old punk beats up one of our elders and you seem to think that catching and punishing this thug is a PROBLEM? Oh, you live in College Terrace where nothing bad ever happens.
Why would women be out on their own at this time of night, unless they are protected by a man or a pit bull?
As a woman, I can attest to the fact that some women are very naive. We are not invincible. We need to be protected.
Sally - is 9pm past your bedtime? Just kidding, sort of. It's a safe neighborhood, she is probably local & probably has walked that area for years. You can get crime stats from the local PD, but I'm willing to bet that aside from the local guy arrested for child porn in that area, it's as low crime now as it was when I was a kid. Maybe she'll carry a boat horn or pepper spray after this, but I'm guessing that if this is the first time she's had a problem in that area, she's been quite safe.
Where is Charles Bronson when we need him?
Hmmm. Perhaps this woman thinks that she shouldn't change her behavior simply because certain thugs are becoming increasingly violent. There is no need to blame this woman for walking outside without a man or dog.
It is a shame that society has digressed to the point that we blame the victim for simply having the audacity to walk outside of her home.
Creeps like this thug -- and all violent criminals -- should be tagged and monitored like the animals that they are. If, after a period of time, they prove that they can be trusted to live among us, then the tag could be removed. Otherwise, either tag them for public safety or throw them in a prison that they fear.
There is one place that prides itself on it's diverse peoples and culture, yet maintains a safe society with almost no crime.
They do it because they recgonize there are elements of society that act like animals and should be treated like animals.
Who are they? Singapore.
Disgusting to think people hate themselves so much that they have to take it out on elders. Shame on this kid...please take a dog on your walk next time if possible.
It is really a shame that people can't go for a walk in their neighborhood at night but that is just the way it is these days. You always have to have to be suspicious of people, especially as you age. You are more vulnerable and so more likely to be a victim. I hope this lady was ok and can continue to go for more walks, hopefully this time with another person and with a cane for protection.
I can only assume the reason the kid came back to assault her was because she didn't have cigerettes (or money), and then she gave him a lecture which might have been the trigger for his anger at not getting what he wanted. Yes, this kid needs to go to juvenile detention and get some serious counseling. He has no impulse control and serious disregard for people in general.
Prophett should realize that not everyone in this world is nice, polite & friendly, some people are downright NASTY. For those people a bit of toughnress is necessary.
Turning the other cheek just results in another cheek being slapped.
Not only should the juvenile be punished, but so should the parents. Both parents. If the child's father is absent that has a lot to do with it.
Make parents accountable for their teenagers. Stop the problem at the source.
Outside Observer (et alia),
Please stop equating punishing violent miscreants with "treating them like animals."
Animals should not be abused or punished.
I will leave the miscreants to you.
She shouldn't have been OUT AT NIGHT? Blame the VICTIM?
There's a very special place in hell for a pig like this kid...too bad it's not juvenile court.
It is not dark yet at 9:00 p.m. !! THis is the longest daylight week of the year.
Hope they catch the thug. If some one came up to me, no matter when or where, and asked for a cigarette, I would simply state "sorry, I don't smoke" and leave it at that instead of stating a gratuitous opinion, and I am a big athletic man...
Could this be the same person who stabbed Lawrence Cronin in April near the train station who later died?
No wonder our young adults are acting violently, between the bang, bang, boom, boom in movies and killing video games they accept that violence is the only way to get their own way.
I once politely suggested to a young adult who was driving the wrong way in a parking lot he was endangering himself. The response, "try to make and who are you to tell me what to do."
Everyone has ignored the fact that this well intentioned lady chose to lecture the lad about his behavior. NOT A GOOD IDEA! This provokes those with low to non existent self esteem into violence. My father had his jaw broken at age 81 by a similar punk for doing the same thing, in Long Beach. This occured 30 years ago. Just say no and leave your comments at home.
