California Cuts Threaten the Status of Universities

Original post made by Concerned high school parent, Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Jun 1, 2012

Those of you worried about UC admissions for your kids should read the following article on the sorry financial state of California's "public" university system. It is very worrisome :

How did we get in this situation? Glad my kids are now out of college, but I worry for (future) grandkids.

We need high speed rail, not universities. Jerry Brown understands this. What's the problem?

Of course I am, but with a point to be made: We cannot have it all, like we used to think we could in California. Despite all evidence to the contrary, our political leaders, from city council to guv, have yet to realize that hard choices are necessary.

For example, do you want high speed rail, or vigorous universities? For those who say, "both", you will get neither.

This is really scary. Not only do the UC's cost 8 times (I mean that 10 times) what they cost 15 years ago, but there are less spots to go around.

The effect is huge. Cant someone tell Sacramento that the reason California is great is because it is an educational power house. If the schools and the UC's go it will just be like anyone else - stanford being and excellent private college.

AND FOLKS your real estate value will tank. If you cant get into UC's from Paly or Gunn, for the average student - then you are better off elsewhere!

Don't miss out on the discussion!
