Any business with that much easily stolen merchandise laying around really needs video surveillance cameras. Maybe they won't stop a theft, but pictures do help to catch the crooks later.

1) Inside job? Were I investigating guilt, I'd start by questioning the private "security" company. How handy not to call police.

2) Lawsuit? Private security company has the legal exposure here, it seems.

3) When items are consigned, the store takes responsibility for them. Paperwork should have been taken care of regarding this at the time of consigning. Assuming someone (store, store's insurance company, security company, security company's insurance company) has money in their pockets, the consigners would be compensated for their loss.

I was under the assumption that most jewelry stores put the contents of their cases into the store safe at the end of the day to prevent things like this from happening in the first place? Even if the security company called right when the alarm came in those involved would still have several mins to get loot and escape. At that is assuming there was an officer in that area available to respond. If not it could be 5 plus mins before officer arrived.

And why was the call from the Burglar Alarm company delayed? How long was it delayed? 1 min? 5 min? 10 min? Seems like this is a key piece of information that is missing from this story.

Also kind of wonder why jewelry stores don't have bars on the windows and video surveillance equipment?

And what about insurance? Sadly, the customer ends up paying for this customers poor management. People would be well-advised not to use stores that don't have adequate security, since it could be your family heirlooms that were in the store for repair that were stolen.

I'm so sorry to hear of this crime against Addison Antiques. It is a lovely store - with such helpful, hard-working and friendly vendors. I have purchased a number of items there and will continue to do so in the future. I am truly,truly sorry.
