PA National Stays Alive in 11-12 All-Star Play
Sports, posted by Theresa, a resident of the Crescent Park neighborhood, on Jul 14, 2007 at 2:02 pm

In a cross-town battle, Palo Alto National defeated Palo Alto American 9-2 in the District 52 All Star Tournament this morning. This puts Palo Alto National in the elimination bracket championship game Sunday at 11AM against San Carlos, playing for the right to face Hillsborough in the tournament championship game to be played on Monday evening.

The first two innings featured solid pitching and sparkling defense on both sides, but the 0-0 tie was broken by Owen Lewis in the top of the 3rd when he drove a fastball over the left field fence, bringing in two of his teammates to make the score 3-0 for the Nationals.

Later in the game, David Oyer also homered with 2 on. Peter Verheecke pitched two innings, giving up a solo homer, then Oyer pitched the 5th and part of the 6th for the National squad, also surrendering a solo homer to the Americans.

Alec Wong finished the game for the Nationals on the mound, moving in from his usual spot at shortstop, where he turned in another game of brilliant defense.

Clay Carey had a home run stolen in the top of the 5th, thanks to great play made by American's right fielder, E Johnson, who leaped and reached over the fence to grab Carey's hard-hit line drive.

PA National plays Sunday at 11AM against San Carlos, who upset San Mateo National 5-0 in the other consolation bracket game Saturday morning.

Theresa,

How does the pitching look for Palo Alto National?

John, one thing PAN has on its roster is good pitching. We counted yesterday and there are 6 pitchers eligible, including Nick Wells, Clay Carey, Alec Wong and David Oyer, who have all pitched very well in this tournament.

In tournament play, the pitching rules get interesting. If a pitcher throws 20 or fewer pitches, he is eligible to pitch the next day. If he throws more than 20 but fewer than 45, he has to take one day off, but can pitch the following day.

This kind of math is necessary when they're facing the possibility of playing 4 games against tough teams in 4 days. To win this tournament, PAN has to beat San Carlos today, then defeat Hillsborough twice on Monday and Tuesday.

San Carlos played Friday (beating Alpine 4-3) and Saturday (5-1 over SMN -- my earlier posts about the score being 5-0 were wrong but I can't edit them); it will be interesting to see what their pitching situation looks like.
