Schoology - facebook for school??? Schools & Kids, posted by JLS Parent, a member of the JLS Middle School community, on Aug 26, 2011 at 5:33 pm
First we had InClass, then Infinite Campus, now my student has come home showing me something called Schoology which is just like facebook but for school. I find it hard to keep up with each new system and am ready to give up completely!!!!

Have spent some time with schoology and my frustration level has come down. I actually like it much better and think it is better than the other systems. It is set out just like a facebook page which means that it is easier to navigate for those who are already familiar with facebook.

From what I learned last night at Back to School Night, Infinite Campus is still the place to find grades, etc. but to find out homework and get homework help, Schoology is the place to go. In fact, we were shown a conversation between students on schoology helping each other with a homework problem (names hidden).
The usual issue with new technology is that they haven't yet figured out the parent part yet so as yet we can't log in to find out about it unless our kids let us in on their account.
And one thing more, the kids have all been issued temporary passwords which are their initials and dates of birth which means that they can probably hack into each other's accounts. Therefore it is a must for them to load in their own passwords. The other thing to remind them is that their teachers and also the JLS admin are monitoring everything so personal and private stuff should not be discussed or entered.
I think this is one that I will like and will work.

This pilot at JLS last year has now moved to Paly and is being used there. Some of the students (those from JLS) understand it better than the Paly teachers, but they are getting there.
It is a good system and should be used at all secondary PAUSD schools.

Why in the world would you complain about a system that will allow you and your student to keep tabs on class assignments as they are assigned, see a calendar of upcoming due dates, and even download class handouts or other files (if the teacher makes them available)?
The Schoology system may not be perfect, but it is a lot better to have it than not to have it.

Parent - the complaints are from the teachers, not the parents or students. Some teachers do not want to learn the new system and put in the info (even though in my opinion, it is a help to most students and allows the parents to spend less rather than more time monitoring their students). Too bad we can't require it of our teachers (that and grading on a timely basis in high school...)

good grief. Stop complaining and be glad that they are working to find the best system. You might thank them for doing so instead of griping that it's inconvenient to switch from a less successful program.
And if your kid won't let you have his or her Schoology password you have bigger problems that not liking the program.
