A warning to landlords and ladies

Original post made by plao alto resident on Jun 28, 2011

Yesterday my Craig List ad was responded to by someone who wrote that he was currently living in the UK and moving to California for his job. He asked me for the move in amount which I provided. He then wrote that he will send me that amount in full and a bit more for me to then send on his decorator who will furnish the apartment so that it will be ready for him when he arrives.
I goggled his name and saw a couple of posts re a person by that name or using one other name that had been scamming people in this way. And there was a long list of other posters who had been scammed.
So I am writing here to warn other landowners that when getting respondents to your ads, never accept anyone who you cannot meet in person. If they are out of the country tell them they should contact you once they are back here. If it is still available you will then discuss it. And never agree to accept a check fuller than your amount to then send on the remainder to someone else.
And you all probably don't need my warning. But in case any of you are new at renting out. It can catch you off guard.

How this functions, they finally have you cash the check and refund them the balance - then their check bounces.
