If people want to make their own personal commitments and get "married" in a church or on the beach or wherever, fine. But if they want legal recognition of their status, whatever that may mean, they need to execute a binding civil contract.
I think this arrangement would end a lot of silly contention, like the kerfluffle over same-sex marriage. If a church won't "marry" LGBT(or mixed-race) couples, they can take their business to a more congenial venue, and who cares?
