Mother and ducklings Adrift on Louis Road
Around Town, posted by Nancy, a resident of the South of Midtown neighborhood, on May 28, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Sadly, a Mother duck chose to introduce her five adorable fluffy ducklings to Palo Alto on Memorial Day. She came out of Adobe Creek and walked her cute little brood down Louis Road, miraculously avoiding the traffic.

But, it's Memorial Day so there is no one available to rescue the family. So far they've probably survived raccoons, possoms and neighborhood cats, but the crows are circling overhead just waiting to pick them off.

I once, together with a neighbor, escorted a lost family of ducks from our front yard to the safety of the creek. It was a long arduous journey for them, but a pleasant afternoon activity for us. We stopped traffic, encouraged them out of dead ends and eventually were rewarded by the family swimming away, completely non-plussed at the excitement they caused. My neighbor and I became closer friends and we both had a story to tell. The rewards for us were probably just as lasting as it was for the ducklings. I encourage anyone to do the same. We didn't have to capture them, just help. They don't need rescue, just a little enterprise and time from their human neighbors.
