Trucks are not supposed to use Charleston, they should use San Antonio. However, truck drivers complain bitterly that the roadbed on San Antonio is too bumpy and uneven for 18 wheelers, and the overhanging pine trees hit their trucks. So, truckers use Charleston.
Palo Alto's Transportation Department is working on plans for San Antonio which include removing all the pine trees and installing bicycle lanes. I hope they get going on this probject soon. With so many new condos being built in the area, traffic will only increase.
Truck traffic on Charleston has increased since the signs were put up which discourage them from using Oregon Expressway.

A great many hazardous materials are carried on streets and rails through the community, necessarily so. We do the best we can, and usually the best is good enough. With all the truckloads of gasoline it takes to keep the area running, it is a tribute that we have so few such accidents. It is better to facilitate such movement rather than to further restrict it.

I didn't know that signs had been put up discouraging trucks to use Oregon Expressway. This explains the additional trucks on East Charleston Road. Because East Charleston/Arastradero is a school commute corridor, shouldn't these Oregon signs be taken down until San Antonio Road improvement plans have been developed and implemented - ready to be used by trucks?

The response by Wallis is troubling. It's illegal to use E Charleston as a truck route and the road is posted "No Trucks ---". This "who cares attitude" is so wrong. I have heard that Oregon Expressway is a no truck route also and it is enforced, even for noise.

For the law, in response to your suggestion that the signs discouraging truckers from using Oregon Expressway should be remove.
The signs were put there in response to a well organized group of Midtown residents who lobied hard to get them installed. If you want to get the signs removed you will have to take on the residents of Midtown.
San Antonio does have a sign designating it a truck route while East Charleston has a sign saying no trucks over 7 tons. There is no sign on San Antonio to tell truckers not to use East Charleston, and if trucks are over 7 tons it is too late to put that sign on East Charleston when they've already turned off San Antonio.

I see a flaw in the process relating to signs posted for trucks entering Palo Alto. When a well-organized group of residents propose a change of signage on a street, someone in a central office should study the impact on other streets before making the change. Why didn't the city post a sign on San Antonio to tell truckers not to use East Charleston at the same time the Oregon Avenue signage was changed?

Signs were not posted on San Antonio to tell truck drivers not to use Charleston because a well organized group was not formed along East Charleston to lobby for signs. These issues are very political in PA.
