Copycats- how ready are we
Palo Alto Issues, posted by Curious, a resident of Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Apr 20, 2007 at 11:18 am

In the light of the recent Virginia Tech tragedy and now the threats against the PAPD, how ready are we here in Palo Alto and in particular Stanford, for the inevitable copycatters, who may not actually do anything but certainly provide disturbing threats? I know our schools are always having drills, but is there a centralised body who could oversee any threat to anywhere in our city?

I doubt there are too many people in this world that are so deeply troubled. I would not fear this from a statistical point of view.

I do not condone such actions of going on shooting spree by anyone, I also in the back of my mind feel that this monster was a creation of his surroundings.

He was outcast and laughed upon. A person getting scorned all the time in the fit of active harmonal activity could create a monster.

Any psycologist want to comment?

1. Can this monster be prevented from being created.

2. Could the school authorities find this person a new university to go to, a place where he could make new friends?

3. Could a change in environment fix this situation before it gets out of hand.

4. Many times councelors many not be able to fix what a new environment could fix?

Sorry made a mistake of posting in the wrong forum. Please ignore the above.

I'd prefer my community be unprepared than find citizens obsessing over an extremely rare outburst.

Fires and earthquakes are rare, too. I believe schools generally have some lockdown proceedure. All I would add is that, as soon as an intruder starts harming people stop cooperating with him.

What threats against the PAPD? That's the police department. Did you mean the School District which is the PAUSD? And when did this happen? Since last Monday?

Yes Kate, it was the police department. It was on PA online at the beginning of the week. There was a threat and they did post a guard as a result. What I didn't see reported was any follow up report.
