Rush Hour Traffic Fee - what's this really about?
Around Town, posted by ToldUSo, a resident of Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Apr 18, 2007 at 10:29 am

So now we have a new topic to consider from our "City" officials. A rush hour traffic fee. This idea is flawed in so many ways I can't begin to list them.

What we really need to do is to get some real sources of retail sales tax into our city and actually want to get our neighbors from Moutain View, Redwood City, etc. here to shop, not frighten them away. Even the rumour of this "fee" would keep shoppers out.

If the fee is used to promote effective alternative transit, then it would be beneficial and not discourage out-of-towners. Effective transit could eliminate many middle and high school kids from being driven to schools. Or it could encourage more people who work in Palo Alto to arrive via Caltrain or other transit.

I will not trade in an area where such a fee is imposed. If you seek commerce you must acomodate customers, not insult them.

Still haven't learned that the more you tax business, the more likely it is to leave town, or not start in the first place.

A large fee should be placed on every business in the Stanford buisness park. It shoud be a parking lot/space fee and collected anually and the money used to improve, speed up traffic on Oregon/Page Mill Expressway and provide shuttle busses to the East Bay area. Also use money collected to discourage cut-thru traffic in residental neighborhoods, school corridors, etc.. It should be high enough to discourage driving to work alone and encourage car pooling and reduce parking spaces for commuters. It should collect several million $$ each year. These businesses only pay a token tax to the city now.
