I am a Palo Alto Resident and the mother of an amazing son who has Down Syndrome. Through out his life, I tried to keep him active in different sports and activities, however he always had trouble making friends. As a parent, it pained me to see him not enjoying himself, or being left out. About two years ago this all changed!!
My family happened to go out to dinner at the Olive Garden in Palo Alto. To my surprise, Palo Alto PD was raising money for Special Olympics by waiting tables..Yes you heard me waiting tables for tips. Each Officer was amazing, they were all there on THEIR OWN TIME, raising money for a great cause. While there, my son met many Special Olympic athletes that were assisting the officers with the different duties. For those of you not familiar with Special Olympics, it is a program the provides year round sports training and competition free of charge for adults and children with both learning and physical disabilites.
So 2 years later, my son is now a teen and has become an amazing athlete. This program has changed our families life. I am writing this not only thank Palo Alto PD for introducing my family to this program, but also to invite all of you to their upcoming Tip-A-Cop. My son, along with other athletes will be present so please stop by, have dinner and SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS! PS..Take it easy on the cops, they are away from their families, raising money for an amazing cause..and NO they are not getting paid to do this, and YES cops will still be working our city.
Date: Tues June 22, 2010

One more thing, the Special Olympic torch will come through our city the day before about 4 pm..The route goes down El Camino from Los Alto to Menlo Park..Come out and cheer for us!!!
