Cable, Satellite or AT&T
Movies, posted by Jon, a resident of the St. Claire Gardens neighborhood, on May 9, 2010 at 11:46 pm

I am moving to Palo Alto and was wondering if the cable company is good or if satellite TV would be the best bet for the money? I would like to avoid adding a home line for telephone and internet any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I get all the major broadcast channels for free with a basic antenna.

I think you get way more programming for the money with satellite. Both Dish Network. and DirecTV are good. DirecTV was ahead for awhile with HD offerings but I think Dish has caught up. Plus, the NFL has this new "Red Zone" channel which isn't available to DirecTV subscribers who aren't signed up for the expensive NFL Sunday Ticket package. That channel IS available to Dish and Cable subscribers. So, if you have DirecTV and you don't want Sunday Ticket, I think you might have a net gain with Dish Network.

You won't need an additional phone line to operate DSL - its on at the same time as your voice line. Cable Internet is faster for downloading movies and stuff, but its so much more expensive.

Honestly, I would go with Satellite (either Dish or DirecTV) and DSL. You'll get the most bang for your buck that way. If ATT Uverse is available you can look into that, but from what I've read its not quite ready for prime time. The quality of the service seems to depend on how close you are to the node. I'm intrigued, I have to admit - the 4 room DVR is a nice touch, but I've read some negative reviews about lengthy problem prone installations.

We've had Comcast digital and cable modem service for years. Had DirectTv before that. DirecTV's both better and cheaper. Cable modem is way faster than DSL. But buy your own cable modem.
