As a new puppy parent, I called the Pet Food Depot to ask if they carried the special brand of kibble that my puppy was raised on and that her breeder recommended. The man who answered said yes, they did carry that brand. Since I had only purchased a small bag to begin with, I inquired about the price of the 20 lb bag. He told me "sorry we don't give prices over the phone"....well I was stunned speechless and hung up the phone. I like to shop in my neighborhood and support local retailers but guess what. This store just lost a prospective 15 year customer. Was I wrong in inquiring about the price of this item? I don't get it. Is there no hope for customer service any more? I am baffled

I shopped at Pet Food Depot various times previously until one unpleasant exchange about 3 months ago when I tried to return a merchandise. To make a story short, the shop owner ended up saying, in front of other customers, that I'm lying for returning an unopened merchandise. Humiliating? Not really. Loss of customer? I've never set foot back there anymore.
I really would like to support local business, but this place is making it hard to do so.

I just can't resist replying to Walter's comment about getting the price of a car over the phone. I really don't see how asking the simple cost of a bag of kibble can possibly be related to the complicated endeavor of choosing a car with all its bells and whistles.

Aren't puppies great? I got two in June last year, and we've had a wonderful time! Our favorite pet store is Pet Food Express in the Charleston Center at the corner of Charleston and Middlefield. The lady who manages that story, Casey, really loves dogs (she loves mine and knows them by name!) and knows a lot about everything for dogs and cats. Sometimes their prices are a little higher than other places, but when I've asked, they've generally been able to match other stores' pricing. Also, they have *great* sales sometimes, and sell many things "4 for the price of 3."
The other dog store that I love is Five Paws Bakery on Main in Los Altos. They have great toys and treats and collars and leads and dog apparel.
