Olympians will be on hand for Santa Clara swim meet

Original post made on Jun 10, 2009

With the nation's top swimmers all pointing toward next month's 2009 ConocoPhillips USA National Championships, this week's annual Santa Clara International Grand Prix takes on a greater importance as the final tuneup before nationals. That's why more than 20 U.S. Olympians, including Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will be on hand in Santa Clara for the final stop of the USA Swimming Grand Prix Series.

Well, according to Universal Sports, Phelps will be competing in the following 4 events:

Fri, June 12: 200m butterfly

Sat, June 13: 400m freestyle

Sun, June 14: 100m freestyle & 100m backstroke

I guess this schedule demonstrates his versatility in competing in a middle-distance as well as a sprint event (400m + 100m) - will be interesting to see how he does compared to his post-Olympic Charlotte debut last month as he gears up for the National Championships and then the Worlds next month...he just finished some high-altitude training up in Colorado, and is reported to be planning to use his new straight-arm "windmill" stroke for 100% of the 100m free.

Also looking forward to see how youngsters Dagny Knutson and ELizabeth Biesel will fare when racing against the Aussie Olympians as well as Coventry...
