I Tapas
Restaurants, posted by Nat, a resident of the Greenmeadow neighborhood, on Jan 6, 2007 at 3:34 pm

This is a new restaurant across the street from the Aquarius Theater.

There are 2 other restaurants and the gelato place right next door, a pizza place and a Chinese restaurant.

We went to I Tapas on a Wednesday night last week. I can't recommend it. It is extemely expensive and only 2 of the 4 small plates we ordered were good. The best plate (some kind of fish and mashed squash) was very very good. But we only had one bite of fish apiece (2 people) for $14. When the waiter recommended it, we didn't ask the price and he didn't offer it. Mistake. The garlic shrimp was okay but the sauce was loaded with salt. We liked the duck wantons in chicken broth. Sake was available only in the large size and was too expensive. I ended up ordering tea instead. My companion said that I could ask for more hot water once the pot was empty. I had never heard of doing this and the person removing the pot did not suggest it. Utensils were placed on the bare table even once it was dirty from our use. No serving utensils were served with the plates but there were large spoons on the table, which we had to use. Our water glasses were not refilled. The plates were served one at a time, which gave us a break between them. Some people might have preferred faster service, but this was fine for us. The bill was a shocker, $52 (with tip and tax) for 4 small plates and one pot of tea.

I would say the portions were stingy for the prices. I also felt the pulled pork was inedible, too salty and tough. I would not go back.

One of the worst lunches I have had in a long time. I thought for the price it was a rip off, would never go back!

I ate there when they first opened. The food was expensive and not good.

Have to agree. We went a few months back and we like tapas generally, but this place was not so good. When I asked if I could have regular water instead of the cucumber-infused that the served, I thought the waiter was going to roll his eyes out of his head. We barely saw him again.

Never been there and never will, but I'm quite sure they will not only survive, they will prosper.

Can anyone name a downtown restaurant that overcharges, abuses patrons, and serves small portions of lousy food that hasn't prospered in downtown?

Can anyone tell me the reason why this is true?

I do not think they will be there long. Also, yes we asked for regular water also and got the same look. It is not a good place. Since the Stanford Pub closed it has been Left at Albequerkee & that place was great, & then it became an Italian restaraunt, which was still pretty good, but now this place is horrible. There are many good places downtown Palo Alto that are reasonably priced for their quality of food, & quanity also, especially for lunch. This place is not good & I do not think they do a good business. I worked downtown PA for 25+ years and ate out for lunch daily. Lots of excellent food.
