Star Trek question

Peter Canavese, how do you figure that Sulu's sword is "unearned?" In the original show, Sulu is an expert fencer.

There are a lot bigger problems with the new Star Trek movie that Sulu's sword.

Ah, a fair question. The character, of course, has fencing training, as George Takei's Sulu proved and as John Cho's mentions. I meant that it was, IMHO, unearned by the plot the way that they incorporated this into the action: to have him whip out a space sword and for the bad guys to have space swords, too. It was just kind of silly that in a phaser world, he actually brings a collabsable saber, and it's actually relevant to the fight sequence. Maybe it's just me... :D Thanks for reading...

Perhaps, but hundreds of years into the future, Warf often takes a blade with him. And fencing is what Sulu's combat training was in. And who wants to deal with that pesky slow phaser reloading time issue. The series is real, right?
