Restaurants, posted by mary, a resident of the Duveneck/St. Francis neighborhood, on Dec 26, 2006 at 6:19 am

Once again I ate at Scott's last week, this time for breakfast. It was not crowded, it was very cold, and once again the service was 'marginal'. I had to ask another waiter to get my breakfast which was sittinig under a warming lamp on the serving counter. I had to ask for water. the day before Thanksgiving a college friend took us, and the service was so bad I had to complain before I left. Is this a pattern?

I have been to Scotts occasionally over the years and have found it to be one of the most disappointing restaurants around, both in its present location and where it used to be on Embarcadero. Its reputation for good food really surprises me as I found the quality OK to mediocre and the ambience and service totally lacking.

The breakfast service at Scott's is truly terrible. But there is not any real choice anymore at Town & Country Village. And the food is strange. The last time I ordered a poached egg, it tasted so strongly of the vinegar used in the water that it was not platable. I complained to the server and was not offered a replacement. I ended up not paying for the egg. I only go there for the biscuits, but now it's difficult to even get butter and the only marmalade is in the tiny packets. Scott's used to have jars of marmalade. I have no idea if the service is as bad for lunch and dinner. Getting water, yes, I had to ask several times.

When the restaurant was in its former location, I found the service good and some food items very good. I loved the room with the fireplace and loved being able to get oysters and the fish was good.

This is an entirely different restaurant and I don't understand why the wait staff is so consistently poor at breakfast.

For a real contrast: I just experienced visiting Manhattan (after many years) and it was very enjoyable plus each and every eatery was very pleasant in terms of food and service - whether a basic diner, deli, or higher-end restaurant. What a contrast to most places around here!!! Plus each and every establishment had holiday decorations (both recent holidays) for a festive feeling. I also noticed (at least by casual observation) a high cleanliness factor.

We have not eaten breakfast there, but have had dinner a number of times, once with two other couples. The food has been really good, the ambiance at this new location is excellent, and the service is sometimes uneven, but never awful.

We like it.
