Menlo's Jerry Rice Jr. commits to UCLA

Original post made on Mar 28, 2009

Menlo School senior football standout Jerry Rice Jr. may be running up and down the field in Stanford Stadium one of these seasons, but he won't be wearing the Cardinal's colors. Instead, it could be UCLA's blue and gold. Rice made it official last week that he's committed to attend UCLA this fall, planning to join the Bruins' football team as a walk-on.

No full-ride for Jerry Jr? Walk on? Wow, he must not be that good if his name can't even get him a scholarship.

Perhaps he doesn't need a full scholarship because his daddy was able to make a living at his chosen profession and did rather well for himself. Maybe he didn't want to take a scholarship away from a team in rebuilding? Congrats Neuheisel.

the first post was correct. JR JR isn't a top prospect. Solid player... just not a top prospect and wasn't likely to get a scholarship from D1 school.

Help me out, I am not a sports person, does this then mean he met the academic qualifications for standard admission to UCLA -- I mean, above a 4.0 GPA and all? That he wasn't catered to because he is a football player?

Dell Curry was a top notch basketball player at Virginia Tech. His son wanted to go to Va. Tech but didn't get a full scholarship. He ended up going to Davidson...you may have heard of him, Stephan Curry. UCLA may have a diamond in the rough. Smart move Jerry Jr. You picked the #1 NCAA school in the country!!

Let's remember that Jerry Rice Sr. went to Mississippi Valley State. Let's also remember that JRS wasn't heavily recruited either and became a great player as his body and mind matured. Let's hope the same for Jr. When he does graduate from UCLA, he might be going to Stanford anyways for graduate school.

why does anybody committing to a college and indicating that they plan to be a "walk-on" merit any particular sports coverage. Can't any student decide to be a "walk-on" to try out for a team?
