Jayne Appel asserted herself in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the 11th-ranked California women's basketball team toppled visiting Stanford, 57-54, on Sunday afternoon to claim sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 in front of a noisy crowd of 10,126. The Cardinal won 32 of the previous 34 meetings between the teams.

Tara should have rotated other players into the game in the first half to see who could make perimeter shots, but she basically kept the same five players in. Several were gassed in the final five minutes.
