Palo Alto will play in its fourth straight Central Coast Section football championship game following a 38-8 blasting of No. 2 Monterey in a Medium School Division semifinal Saturday at San Jose City College. The Vikings did it with defense, a lot of it. Palo Alto's defensive effort was excellent in every phase of the game as the secondary came away with two interceptions, the linebackers chalked up seven sacks, and the defensive line consistently made plays behind the line of scrimmage.

I think the score was 38-16 - Monterey scored on on an interception return near the end of the game, got the 2 point conversion, then succeeded on recovering an onside kick and scored again. Until there was less than 2:00 to go in the game, the score was 38-0, however.

Question: Why did Paly play in the "large" school division last year and the "Middle" school division this year. Is it based on a declining enrollment or something else? Is seems strange to me.

The CCS division you play in is determined by your school's enrollment in relation to the other teams in the playoffs. 24 teams make the playoffs (not counting the Open division); the 8 largest schools play in the Large school division, the next 8 play in Medium and the smallest 8 play in Small. This year more schools with larger enrollments than Paly made the playoffs so they ended up in Medium -- it has nothing to due with declining enrollment, simply with the overall makeup of the pool.

Not to take anything away from the outstanding victory but the article failed to mention that one of Monterey's running backs broke his leg during the previous game.

I believe there is a sad conclusion to this story. From what I heard on tv today, the Los Gatos team (who are the team Paly will play next) lost their star player yesterday who died suddenly. I trust all will respect whatever happens next.
